What is Cargo Insurance?

To Understand why you need to buy cargo insurance to protect your shipment while in transit, first understand what Carrier Liability Limits are.

A carriers’ liability (often determined by their tariff rules) will vary and also the shipments value is part of that determination. Also, it may not always be possible for a Consignee to thoroughly inspect your freight at delivery until your freight is un-packed. Please remember to note any “damage or loss” or even tears or signs of damage to the outside of your freight when signing at the delivery or as soon as possible. Any damage to your Freight by the Carriers Must be reported to the Carrier responsible within 7 calendar days or 5 business days in a normal week.

The Shipping Emporium offers you very reasonable priced Cargo insurance for peace of mind when your Freight is in transit with our Carriers.

How much does cargo Insurance cost? Approximately $.28 per $100 in value with a $25 minimum. For example, for many goods if $50,000 in value your cargo insurance is $140 and if your shipments value is $5000 you would pay $25. Over $100,000 cargo insurance may need underwriting approval, best to contact us at least 24-48 hours before picking up. Under $100,000 Cargo insurance contact us the day before or any time before your shipment is picked up. Although it is not very often that your goods will be damaged while in transit with our Carriers, you will have peace of mind that your shipment is covered with cargo insurance, regardless of a Carrier’s liability limits.

What is Concealed Damage? When your freight arrives to you or your Consignee, inspect and note any damage on the Signature page. However, if there is hidden damage i.e. it cannot be seen at the outside of your Freight package, that is’ concealed damage’. All your freight Deliveries should be opened in a timely matter, and if the is ‘concealed damage’ take as many pictures as you can and report this immediately. You have only 4-5 days to report any hidden damage after your delivery.

What is LTL (Less than Truckload) shipping?

For Shippers, if you’re quoting with a small parcels carrier your pricing will be very high when your weight reaches 100-150 pounds or more and that is when you need to check with the Shipping Emporium, www.shippingemp.com to see if we can save you money. And, for Shipments that are not quite big enough for a FTL (Full Truck Load) then you can also save money with LTL for 6 pallets or less and 5000 pounds or less.

For most carriers, between 100 to 10,000 pounds is LTL and rates need to be done manually (not in an online quoting system) if more than 8 feet, more than 5000 pounds and or more than 6 pallets. Please email or call us at The Shipping Emporium for your best possible LTL rates for these.

How do you handle pricing for – Haz Mat, Over-length at over 8 feet, Protect from Freeze, Needs Cargo Insurance, and other specialized Accessorials?

You may have more than 8-10 pallets and differing on the weight and dimensions that will also play a role in how much truck space is needed. Freight Shipping Terms:

Bill of Lading (BOL)

LTL (Less than Truckload)

And the differences between these 2 Transportation Modes will vary,

the Most Common Difference is with LTL your shipment is only using part

of a 53 Van space, while a FTL (Full Truckload) can take up to that 53 foot van space and weigh up the estimated 43,000 pound limit.

In LTL, if you are shipping certain goods frequently, you may have a Freight Class and NMFC code that applies for you shipment. In addition, and with some Freight Classes being Density-Based please always provide in FULL, your Shipments details- weight for every pallet, dimensions (length x width x height in inches) and weight per pallet, so that we can help you to determine the correct class.

The Freight Class System Created by NMFTA (National Motor Freight Trucking Association) is commonly used by some carriers.
